Parent's Review of Emirates International School in Dubai, UAE
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Emirates International School
In what town or city is this school located?
Dubai
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
International Baccalaureate
What grade levels are represented at this school?
KG1 through to G 12
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Most children are taken by car by their parents but a bus service (with seat belts) is available.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
Hardly any extra curricular activities are available until the child reaches Grade 3 - then they have the opportunity to stay for extra P.E. once a week and they can become involevd in the school production (and its rehersals) towards the end of the year - of course there are other after school activities but at a cost. There is ballet, swimming (the school has a pool) karate, football (the school has grass pitches) and tennis (2 courts) and classes that the teachers themselves offer such as arts and crafts or drama - again a fee is payable.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
The first question is not applicable in my case - and unfortunately I don't believe there are any repatriation preparation programs in place.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
Nope - no parent teacher organisation although parents are very welcome to come into the school and volunteer their services. There are parents who read with the children regularly, class parents are elected every year and they accompany the teacher and the class on school trips for example and the girl scout and boy scout programmes are run by parents also.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
This school has 94 different nationalities registered. It is truly an international school where a an international or mixed race child will not feel out of place. Race, culture and religion are not an issue here - the school teaches tolerance and acceptance and succeeds. The primary and junior schools have an excellent reputation although more works needs to be done in the higher grades. Teacher's salaries need to increase for there to be continuity of staff and higher staff morale. All in all a good school with an approachable staff and 'open door' policy. We were very happy there.
