Parent's Review of American Nicaraguan School in Managua, Nicaragua

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American Nicaraguan School

In what town or city is this school located?

Managua

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

PreK-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Private car and a few buses.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The facilities are really run down. The elementary classrooms are fairly big but the desks and supplies are old and battered. My kids sit in old metal folding chairs. The high school is a mess. The class rooms are very small and very hot. My kids complain constantly about headaches from the heat. It is very loud in the classrooms as they are open to the elements. No air conditioning.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Very little. The curriculum seems lower then they are used to. They have spoken English their whole lives, but most of the students there are Nicaraguans who speak mostly Spanish. They are not accepting to those who do not speak English, especially it seems the Asian students.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Very few. The PTA seems very exclusive and/or non-exsistent. There are a few activities, it seems to be getting better but there is a lack of spirit.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Look around. Make sure you tour the school and think twice if your child does not speak English.
