Parent's Review of International School of Budapest in Budapest, Hungary

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

International School of Budapest

In what town or city is this school located?

Budapest

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-7

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

parents, carpool, school vans

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

ISB has recently moved to bigger and better facilities in Csilleberc. The classroom building has been refurbished. There is an auditorium, gym and pool. Extra-curricular activities are available based on demand (soccer, karate, languages, arts and crafts, gymnastics, etc.)

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

We chose ISB for its size and its bilingual program. We wanted our children to learn Hungarian--their father's language. For the most part, it has been a success. Our son will remain in the bilingual program; our daughter will join the international (English-only teaching) this fall, as there is no bilingual program at her level. We have been very happy with the school. It is a warm, caring environment. The children are well-behaved. The transition was easy for our children. It has been wonderful for our children to meet kids from all over the world. The curriculum is equal to or more advanced to the private school they attended in Colorado.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Every Friday parents are invited to attend afternoon assembly, where classes present their projects, discuss activities, etc. with the entire school. There are various social events throughout the year--mostly held at the end of the school day. Some are held in the evening. Each year, there is an International Day when each country is represented in an exhibition. Each country also prepares their own cuisine. It's a wonderful day!

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

It's a small, growing school. The class sizes are small, which appealed to us. It's been wonderful meeting students, parents and teachers from all over the world. We considered the American School and the British School when looking at schools in Budapest in 2000. We chose ISB for its bilingual program, the international atmosphere and curriculum and its peaceful location. It just felt right! We haven't regretted our choice!
