Parent's Review of Shrewsbury International School in Bangkok, Thailand

Submitted by linhn

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Shrewsbury International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Bangkok

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British, International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre Prep School, Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form College

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Car/Bus is the most popular transport, followed by train and boat (Shrewsbury has a school boat). Shrewsbury also has a condominium called Chatrium which is closely connected and many students who live there walk to school.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Great Facilities! Sports facilities are excellent - Two full length pools, one small pool (for younger kids), Tennis courts, gymnasium, four locker rooms, a huge sports hall which can be used for badminton, basketball, indoor hockey etc., two sports fields equipped with running tracks and an indoor running track. There is also a memorial (assembly) hall, a recital hall in the music department, 15+ music practise rooms and classrooms, a choral singing room, numerous classrooms (as expected), 20+ computer rooms, a two storey library, a school shop, large play grounds/social areas, a canteen and a school shuttle boat which brings students to the BTS Station (saphan taksin).

As for Extra curricular activities, they work on a house system rotation, with different houses getting to choose from a selection of activities every term. There are cooking classes, art classes, pottery classes, clay classes, dance classes, yoga classes, community help activities, swimming classes, guitar classes, music classes, porcelain painting classes, zumba classes, drama classes, football classes, sports classes etc. There is also an 'Excellence Program' which are basically sports teams (eg. football, basketball, softball, teeball, basketball, athletics, running, gymnastics, swimming) , drama productions and music ensembles (orchestra, choir, chamber choir, quartets, jazz ensembles etc.) . These are usually auditioned for.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The children here are very friendly and the moment my child stepped into class, the teacher introduced her and many people volunteered to show her around and help her make friends for her first few days. The curriculum in my home country was Australian and overall, the transition was easy as everyone was welcoming and kind.

There are programs such as International Day where students learn about different countries and get to experience cultures and in the Senior School, there is a lesson called Learning For Life which is where students focus on different cultures, growing up etc.

The school is closely affiliated with Shrewsbury UK and is their sister school. On some formal events, members of Shrewsbury UK will visit and experience life at their sister school, and vice versa. Many graduating year 13s from Shrewsbury UK also opt to have a gap year at Shrewsbury Bangkok where they help out in the school community.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There aren't exactly parent-teacher organizations but they have a close relationship here. There are many events in the school such as productions, recitals, sporting events etc. where teachers often mingle with parents.

There is also a Shrewsbury Parents Association (SPA) who organize events at school such as Bake Sales, parties, movie nights, family fun nights etc.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The school is amazing and you can really get the best out of it if your child is willing to study hard. The school's achievement rate is significantly higher than other international schools in bangkok, with many students receiving Top in the World and Top in Thailand prizes in their iGCSE and A-Level examinations.
