Parent's Review of Taipei American School in Taipei, Taiwan

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Taipei American School

In what town or city is this school located?

Taipei

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Called American But Asian

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Walk, bus,private car

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

School has world class facilities. All school sections well funded for bricks and mortar. Very impressive arts. Have been sadly behind in athletics for years. Now trying to raise that bar with the typical Asian mentality of throwing money and objectives to the program.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Transition is difficult if you are not Asian. School does not focus on expats. School focus is ABCs with money to donate more to the school facilities. Most kids go to US for college but come back to Asia for work.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Non Asians are in the minority. Each class has an informal parent group that meets for lunch periodically. This is a 100% Asian group- expats or even 1/2.s not invited. PTA active, lots of money but very closed to newcomers.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

If you have the option for HK, China, Singapore look into it. As a non Asian expat you will have a hard time for you kids (who will be considered not smart) and as a parent it is socially difficult. Even the small expat groups are not welcoming. Good luck!
