International School of Iceland
In what town or city is this school located?
Gardabae
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
International
What grade levels are represented at this school?
k-7
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Walk, Driven or through arrangements with the Embassies.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The school is in a beautiful location, right on the ocean with open surroundings. Its a private school located within an Icelandic public school. ISI is it´s own entity but flows within the same building stucture as the public school. I love this relationship. It provides a larger environment for the ISI students to interact with and gives them access to the Icelandic community.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
My son is half Icelandic and came from the Icelandic school system. He attended for 2 years and enjoyed the small classes where he was guided and challenged to meet his academic needs. He transitioned back into the Icelandic school system after 7th grade and thanks to the bi-lingual program at ISI he grew and prospered in the Icelandic language.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
The school has a strong Parent Association that has events throughout the year. In addition, the school has a facebook page strictly for parents and close members of the ISI community that keeps everyone in the loop of things. Recently ISI has also started a great general facebook page open to the general public.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
Nothing speaks more then to visit the school. But if that isn´t an option before committing, I would like to offer that great care is given to each student to provide an environment in which they thrive and grow as students and individuals. I´m very grateful to have had this opportunity.
