Parent's Review of Anglo American School in Moscow, Russia

Submitted by Roseberry75

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Anglo American School

In what town or city is this school located?

Moscow

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Nursery to gr12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Walk from the attached neighborhood, school bus or drivers

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The physical space of the school is good. The extra curricular activities at the school for the elementary students are awful. They are run by teachers who are not typically qualified to run that particular after school activity. They are an utter waste of time. In middle school and high school they have sport teams and drama but little else after school. If parents want to organize a group, they are made to pay for facility use.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

They have sporadic transition programs. They do a good job helping kids when they arrive. Repatriation is not done until the end of the school year. By then, many kids have already left.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is an active PTO organization. It is simply a fund raising organization. Given that tuition at the school is $30,000 per year, and the school charges for absolutely everything, such as facility rental, use of the gym facilities by parents etc., it is very unnecessary for the PTO to spend such huge of amounts of time and effort fund raising for this school.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Think hard about attending here. This school thinks it is much better than it is. The curriculum, particularly math, is very weak. Most parents engage tutors for the children to keep up with the home curriculum. The teachers' children receive preference in sports, drama clubs etc. The teachers receive preference for use of school facilities such as the workout room. It is not nearly good enough for the high tuition paid and the headmaster is ineffective. The administration does not welcome constructive criticism. The best advice? Attend ISM if given the choice.
