Parent's Review of Okinawa Christian School International in Yomitan, Japan

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Okinawa Christian School International

In what town or city is this school located?

Yomitan

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Preschool - Grade 12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most by school bus or parent drop off. The main road to the entrance is steep and does not have good sidewalks. Walking to school is not realistic.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

They do have sports such as track, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and tennis. They play against both local Japanese schools and the American DoD schools. They do a great job with their annual Christmas program and walk-a-thon.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

OCSI is accredited by both the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). They align closely with the US standards and the school year is typical of that of the US. Not much transition was needed.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

They do encourage parent involvement in volunteering in the classroom. They hold special events throughout the year for parents to be involved in (such as making gingerbread houses or sleep-away camp). Bible study groups for parents are also offered.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The staff here really do care about the children, and not just the academic progress but for the children as a whole. The building is old but progress is continued to be made. I liked how the older children invested in the younger children by volunteering with them.
