Parent's Review of St. Mary's International School in Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

St. Mary's International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Setagaya, Tokyo

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Local

What grade levels are represented at this school?

RP-G.12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most students of age 14-18 take the train and/or walk to school, and all the way up a huge hill. However the school bus is provided which is mostly used by the younger children.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The facilities are new and fairly big. They have cleaners everyday. The extra-curricular activities aren't very diverse however the school wins a lot of competitions through it.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

In this school there are short group discussions with the other new students. Otherwise no further support is provided.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is a PTA which is dominated by the people who have been going there for over 10 years. There will be social events but not so often.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Well, if their child is just arriving from another country and wants a place that helps adjusting to the environment, this school unfortunately won't do much. In this school, most students have been there most of their life and rarely lived abroad. The people aren't all that open-minded towards new comers. So the first few years will be a struggle to fit in.
