Parent's Review of Malacca Expatriate School (MES) in Malacca, Malaysia

Submitted by broadand

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Malacca Expatriate School (MES)

In what town or city is this school located?

Malacca

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Local

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Primary & Secondary

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

By car or taxi. The school is located 6km outside Malacca town, the school does not provide transport for the children and no reliable public bus service is available.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Facilities are very basic. The school styles itself as 'international' and supposedly follows the British curriculum but all of the teachers are local. The secondary 'principal' is a Scot's woman from the UK whose qualifications are questionable and whose attitude is both arrogant and overly authoritarian. Physical education is part of the curriculum but there is no gymnasium and PE consists of the students either running around or playing games in the tarmac car park in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees C, with absolutely no protection from the sun. EC activities are a joke, I mean sewing and needle classes for 13 & 14 year olds, come on!

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Nothing.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There are no social activities available and no parent-teacher organization exists.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Don't bother! This school is a masterpiece of disorganization and I worried for the safety of my child every day she attended this school. The school offers a 'lunch menu' for the children but the food offered is terrible and hygiene is non-existent. The principals have no concept of modern child care and posess attitudes which are better suited to the 1950's era. It would seem that this school wishes only to separate parents from their money. Avoid!
