How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The American School of Jeddah has been around in Jeddah for so many years. Although most of the school buildings are built many years ago, they are renovated and are constantly maintained. The school has recently built up two new extension buildings for the Middle and Elementary schools. Classrooms around the buildings are spacious and air conditioned. I also found that the library at the school is big and holds a vast collections of books. The school has several playgrounds with a day care/nursery outdoors and indoors play areas. A huge soccer field is also a plus when it comes to outdoors activities and sports. In terms of extra-curricular activities, the school offers various sports like soccer, volleyball, table tennis, martial arts and more. Other clubs are arts, music ...
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
My son is in grade 6. We moved from Lebanon to Jeddah. Both my son and I have felt a huge difference in the approaches the school follows to pass information to children. My son has adapted to the school and to the teachers very easily so over all it was an easy transition. The school follows the common core standards which I think is common between American schools and I feel like it has developed my sons skills in problem solving and applying knowledge. With hands on projects that involve technology tools, I find my son enjoying doing school work.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
I have been to parent-teacher conferences at the school before and they were very informative and beneficial especially to get to know the teachers. I know that the school also has PTSA committee which is a representation of parents at the school and they set up meetings all the time that parents can attend. Parents have a lot of options to get involved in the school and its community. I was also happy with the workshops that the school sets up for parents. One of them that I attended was a very informative and fun literacy workshop. I really enjoyed it.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
Although the school's facility is a bit older than other schools around in Jeddah, I find that this school caters to my son's educational needs. The school has had a not-so well reputation for quite sometime, but I can sense the vast difference and the improvement of the school and its leadership. I also look forward to the new school campus that they are finishing in around 2 years.
