Parent's Review of American School Foundation of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American School Foundation of Guadalajara

In what town or city is this school located?

Guadalajara

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Mexican school with American curriculum

What grade levels are represented at this school?

preschool through 12th

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

private car, school bus, or taxi

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Quite good facilities, though the campus is showing its age. There are white boards in the classrooms and a decent technology program. This is one of the best resourced schools in the city. Many after school sports and activities including a programming class and robotics class.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

They try to help with transitions and fancy themselves an international school, but they are not. About 98% of the population are privileged Mexicans so just recognize that. The counselors are kind people who try to consider 3rd culture children, but the overwhelming Mexican culture means that it can be difficult for children and parents to assimilate. Parents are kind, their privileged children are a mixed bag.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

You must speak Spanish well to have any hope of assimilating. Otherwise, you will congregate with the other ex-pats. Even with Spanish, it's hard to break into these "legacy" families.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Understand the Mexican cultural context and realize this is in no way an international schools. Math program is strong and the English Language arts are quite weak.
