Parent's Review of Ermitage International School of France in Maisons-Laffitte, France
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Ermitage International School of France
In what town or city is this school located?
Maisons-Laffitte
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
International (boarding and day pupils)
What grade levels are represented at this school?
All levels
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Many walk as they live locally; others by bike, scooter or by car with parents.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The school is housed on a number of different sites, mainly in old converted 'château'-style mansions, all within easy walking distance of each other. Canteen housed at the Primary school, which means a short walk for college and lycée children. Extra-curricular activities include social programmes such as Passeport pour Demain, Round Square, etc. Lots of local sports clubs available, so many children just go straight to them from class.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
There are different levels for French, English and Maths, which cater for different backgrounds and levels. Children can move levels during the year if necessary. Very caring and individual attitude towards all children, with teachers available at any time to meet and discuss progress, issues etc. The school offers both the French and International baccalauréat, which gives a greater choice to children returning home afterwards.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
The school has an 'Amicale' group, run by parents, which is very active raising funds by sales, drinks parties, school events etc. Generally very friendly and proactive attitude at the school gates means that new parents quickly feel welcome and find like-minded people to socialise with. Personally, I found this school far more welcoming than the one in central Paris that my daughter first attended; the atmosphere is far more informal and sociable, making it easier to 'fit in'.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
This school is not the 'traditional' French model (and that, many say, is why they like it!). Be prepared for lots of homework and your child being closely followed by regular teachers' meetings etc. We are very happy with the school; our children are amongst those like themselves and are very motivated to learn and do well.
