Parent's Review of Changchun American International School in Changchun, China

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Changchun American International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Changchun

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Chinese, but calls itself American International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Facilities are good, the school is well equipped with tech and sports facilities. Children cannot enjoy outdoor activities often due to the long winter and to high levels of air pollution.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The school calls itself American, but American is only the name. There is no curriculum and the children are given loads of homework due to the fact that the school tries to look good for the Chinese parents who see that a school is only good if kids have tons of homework everyday, even during holidays. The school has many school days on Saturdays or Sundays as well, which is not international at all.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Poor, the school is all about image, so social activities are done for marketing purposes, not to bring the school community together.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Set your expectations low. The school is not able to keep good teachers, so your child may end up with an inexperienced teacher. As I mentioned earlier, there is no curriculum and some teachers just show up and teach whatever comes to their mind on that day.
