Parent's Review of International Community School in Singapore, Singapore

Submitted by nanakapp

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

International Community School

In what town or city is this school located?

Singapore

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Mostly American- Christian

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre K-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus and walk. I also went to the school to teach and took a bus and walked. Some took trains if they lived further away. ICS is located in the Clementi area.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

It was a small school, but had a nice, family like atmosphere. The facilities were nice- fairly comparable to US schools and they had sports and some other activities.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

My child attended the orientation, but not specific to the country. The curriculum was a year ahead of our US school so my daughter had a very hard time there. Nothing was really done to help transition her. She also did not really feel very accepted by some other students. There was no program for repatriation.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

We had several social activities, including a carnival, programs, luncheons, a Christmas party, and also celebrated American holidays together., It had a PTA which drew parents together..

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

That it may be a harder program than they came out of in the US, and to encourage their child to take time to make friends. It doesn't happen overnight. But the teachers are great and helpful and go overboard to help.
