Parent's Review of Hong Kong International School in Tai Tam and Repulse Bay, Hong Kong
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Hong Kong International School
In what town or city is this school located?
Tai Tam and Repulse Bay
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
American-ish
What grade levels are represented at this school?
Pre-k to 12
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Mandatory bussing
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
HKIS has nice facilities compared to other international schools in HK. The Lower Primary is under redevelopment. The Upper Primary is older with improvement plans scheduled. The High school and Middle School are very nice.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
The School is working on changing its curriculum to align with the U.S. common core. They have been slow to update their programs and the lower schools curriculum from experience has not met the quality of the public school my children attended in the U.S. The middle and High Schools are better.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
They utilize a Parent Advisory Group (PAG) in each division. Parents have to apply with a resume to be considered to be part of this group. They also have an active Parent Faculty Organising that is well organized and helps raise funds/create community for the school. There are many opportunities to volunteer.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
If you are interested in the lower schools- comparing the education that our two older kids got in the U.S.- HKIS' early reading and writing programs are weak compared our U.S. Schools. We have been unimpressed with the their lack of phonics instruction, early literacy screening, handwriting instruction and overall transparency of what is being taught. However their are many nice teachers. We found the upper schools to be much better.
