Parent's Review of American International School in Cariari - Heredia, Costa Rica

Submitted by NothingButNet

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Cariari - Heredia

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

American / International.

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Car and Bus

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Classrooms and Science Lab are modern and all situated at ground level (i.e., no second-story classrooms or offices). Gymnasium is adequate for basketball. Library is stocked with materials for all ages and provides comfortable environment for reading and study. Small football pitch adjacent to school property. School lacks an auditorium. Extra-curricular activities include boys and girls soccer (football), volleyball, karate, tennis, a drama club and basketball.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

AIS is accredited by AdvanceED, so the curriculum is very similar to the curriculum used by the majority of schools in the U.S. When it was necessary to address a weakness in a particular subject, the teachers were very helpful and wasted no time in proving support and communicating with me along the way. As for preparing for repatriation, AIS employs a College Counselor that is active in preparing high school students for college.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There are several events during the year whereby parents can be actively engaged at the school with other parents and their children. There is a PTO, but PTO activities vary from year to year depending on the number of parent volunteers.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

This school is small, less than 300 students, but the atmosphere is safe and friendly with a focus on student success. Every teacher I have met is enthusiastic and enjoys his/her job. I would also encourage any parent to be prepared to volunteer their time in support of the school because AIS depends on parent-volunteers to serve on various committees. Overall, I am very satisfied with AIS!
