Parent's Review of Yangon Academy in Yangon, Myanmar

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Yangon Academy

In what town or city is this school located?

Yangon

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

American-Burmese

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

private car, bus

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The facilities are appalling and none existent. There is NO cafeteria, no theatre or assembly hall, no sports facilities, tiny plastic playground and not even a proper library.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

We only stayed a few weeks and moved to International School Myanmar which is a real school with well qualified teachers and proper facilities and curriculum. Yangon Academy has no ESL program to help non English speaker - who are the majority and I did not like the Filippino teachers with their bad English. It is not international in any sense of the word and has no transition programs. There was a good community service program but I've been told this finished when some of the teachers left mid year.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The Elementary does a few assemblies and usual events for parents but the timing is usually bad and because of traffic, it is hard to attend these. There is no teacher-parent organization and the school is run by a really ineffective and useless principal and a greedy young owner who struts round like he is God. The other problem I found with elementary were too many old teachers who my kid told me took naps and were always off sick. Guess they are cheap. Teachers are always quitting.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Don't do it. They make false promises and are heavily into profit making by cramming in as many kids as possible. International School of Myanmar or International School of Yangon are much better. There are 3-4 big name new schools opening with proper management and great facilities.
