Parent's Review of Albanian International School in Tirana, Albania

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Albanian International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Tirana

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Preschool to Grade 9

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Car, taxi

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Building is a renovated former French Embassy. Small classes and small class size which is good for differentiated learning. Extra-curricular is light consisting of homework club and music lessons.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

They have mainly American teachers and follow a common core curricula. The MAP test they use shows me where my son is compared to his US peers and measures his academic growth. They also have an ESL program for non-native speakers but we didn't need it of course.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The parents have a meeting the first Friday of every month with the director alone to share concerns and then meet with the teachers individually if they choose to. They have many student shows (Halloween, Christmas, Albanian Independence, International Day)

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

It's a good school but they do hold the students and parents accountable. They use an online grade/homework (EngradePro) system to monitor grades and also use an additional online science program so internet access is a must. Like I said before the MAP program is nice to show your students progress. This appears to be the only school in the city that just doesn't change grades to make parents happy so don't enroll if you expect special favors. The academic director is former US military so everyone is treated the same and the students all have the same right to learn. Your child is special, but so is everyone elses :)
