An Expat Talks about Moving to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Dhahran

Name three things that you wish you had brought and three you wish you had left at home.

I wish I had brought hair mousse for my daughter who has very curly hair. More books and movies. I wish I had left all my knickknacks and such, no room in this house for such things.

What advice would you give someone preparing to move to your area about the actual move, choosing a neighborhood and finding a home?

Keep an open mind. Things are much different here. Somethings are better, example: my kids can play outside safely all the times. And, somethings are worse, not being able to drive limits when and how I can do my shopping, etc.

What type of housing do you live in? Is this typical for most expats in your area?

Townhouse, large neighborhood. yes, very typical.

How did you choose your neighborhood and find your home or apartment?

We live in company housing there is no choice.

Are your housing costs higher or lower than they were in your home country? What is the average cost of housing there?

Much lower since they are provided or subsidised by most companies here. We pay around $400-$500 a month.
