An Expat Talks about Moving to Boquete, Panama

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Boquete

Name three things that you wish you had brought and three you wish you had left at home.

You will need good pots and pans from home, any clothing should be brought with you, fabrics and quality here are not good, and any electronics. Again, an expensive item here.

What advice would you give someone preparing to move to your area about the actual move, choosing a neighborhood and finding a home?

Leave knick knacks, pictures, etc at home. Bring only what is dear to you and buy the rest here. All areas are nice, it just depends on how far from town you want to be, how high up a mountain and how windy you want it. Rent for the shortest lease until you explore.

What type of housing do you live in? Is this typical for most expats in your area?

I rent a small house in Volcancito. A lovely area but you really need a car to live here. The rents are cheaper than Bajo Boquete. I love the house and neighborhood but have a hard time getting to town. The shuttle bus is erratic, it serves all of Volcancito.

How did you choose your neighborhood and find your home or apartment?

I lived in Leon, Nicaragua and was tired of heat, The temperatures here suit me well. I found an apartment in Alto Boquete on the Internet, and took a 6 month lease. I will be moving closer to town as I don't own a car.

Are your housing costs higher or lower than they were in your home country? What is the average cost of housing there?

My housing costs here are 1/4 of what I'd pay in the States for a house and yard.
