Expat Advice: Culture Shock in The Algarve, Portugal

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

The Algarve

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

Expats in The Algarve often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Portuguese is the official language of the region, and many locals may not be able to communicate in English. Additionally, the local customs and traditions can be difficult to understand and navigate for those who are not familiar with them. Expats may also find it difficult to adjust to the slower pace of life in The Algarve, as well as the more relaxed attitude towards timekeeping. Finally, the hot and humid climate can be a challenge for those who are not used to it.
