Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Taif, Saudi Arabia

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Taif

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

One of the most challenging aspects of the local culture for expats in Taif is the strict adherence to Islamic law and the conservative dress code. Women are expected to wear an abaya and hijab in public, and men must dress modestly. Additionally, alcohol and pork are strictly prohibited, and public displays of affection are not allowed. Expats may also find it difficult to adjust to the lack of nightlife and entertainment options, as well as the limited availability of Western products.
