Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Placencia, Belize

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Placencia

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

Expats in Placencia often find the language barrier to be a challenge, as English is not widely spoken in the area. Additionally, the local culture is quite different from what many expats are used to, and it can take some time to adjust to the slower pace of life and the more relaxed attitude towards time management. Furthermore, the local cuisine can be quite different from what expats are used to, and it can take some time to get used to the flavors and ingredients. Finally, the hot and humid climate can be difficult to adjust to, especially for those coming from cooler climates.
