Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Batam, Indonesia

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Batam

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

One of the most challenging aspects of the local culture for expats in Batam is the language barrier. Many locals speak Bahasa Indonesia, which can be difficult for expats to understand. Additionally, the local customs and traditions can be difficult to navigate for those who are not familiar with them. Expats may also find it difficult to adjust to the slower pace of life in Batam, as well as the more relaxed attitude towards punctuality. Finally, expats may find it difficult to find familiar foods and products, as the local cuisine and products may be quite different from what they are used to.
