Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Negombo, Sri Lanka

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Negombo

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

Expats in Negombo often find the local culture to be quite different from what they are used to. The language barrier can be a challenge, as English is not widely spoken in the area. Additionally, the local customs and traditions can be difficult to understand and navigate. Expats may also find the local cuisine to be quite different from what they are used to, as it is heavily spiced and often includes unfamiliar ingredients. Finally, the climate can be a challenge, as Negombo is hot and humid for much of the year.
