If they speak another language in your new country, do you speak the language? If yes, did you learn the language before you moved or while abroad? If no, are you planning to learn the language?

Some people there spoke English. I wanted to learn the Samoan language, but for the most part, was working too many hours.

Were you worried or concerned about culture shock before you moved abroad?

Not really. I love everyone. I don't believe in prejudice. I support equality. I respect everyone, whether young or old, rich or poor, man or woman, no matter what color, religion or nation one comes from. 99 times out of 100, IF you treat someone with respect, they respond with kindness.

How significant was the culture shock you experienced when you moved abroad?

Only the haze and the driving were any problem at all, and I'm learning how to deal with both.

Expats often talk about going through the "stages of culture shock." Examples include the honeymoon phase, the irritation-to-anger stage, the rejection of the culture stage, and the cultural adjustment phase. Do you feel like you went through these or any other stages as you settled into the new culture?

The driving irritated me, as many people do not even look at the lines in the road. However, once you realize that you adjust your driving, so that it is mostly safe. The very loud prayer chanting in the very early morning would wake me up. My wife is used to it, and sleeps through it easily. LOL

What, if any, were some of the changes you noticed in yourself that might have been caused by culture shock? These might include things such as anger, depression, anxiety, increased eating or drinking, frustration, homesickness, etc.

The heat and humidity can sometimes be a bit difficult, so I now have air conditioning in my house. No problems. All the malls are airconditioned, and so are the cars. I don't get homesick. I like the variety of foods in the markets and grocery stores. So, cooking at home is great! I love the variety of fruits. However, I don't always find something that I enjoy eating at the restaurants.

What are some things you appreciate most about the new culture?

Friendliness, kindness, neighbors often help neighbors when you are sick, or sad. They will cook and bring you food. So kind and loving! We do the same for our neighbors!

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

Well, I only speak English. Fortunately, my wife speaks Tamil, Malay, English, and a few other languages. So she is tremendously helpful in every way.

Did you "commit" any embarrassing or humorous cultural blunders? If you did and you'd like to share them, please do tell!

Yes, a male does not shake a lady's hand UNLESS she herself acts first. You do NOT hug members of the opposite sex. Also, be very careful about complimenting a lady, as she may take this as "interest" in her...especially IF she is married! This was difficult for me, as I am a very friendly (in a non sexual way!) person, who used to hug and compliment everyone. LOL
