Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Escazu, Costa Rica

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Escazu

If they speak another language in your new country, do you speak the language? If yes, did you learn the language before you moved or while abroad? If no, are you planning to learn the language?

Learning the language of a new place is incredibly important as it allows people to communicate with local people and become immersed in the culture. Learning the language also allows people to have more in-depth conversations with locals and gain insights into the intricacies of the culture that they would otherwise not be able to achieve. Being able to communicate in the language of the place also allows visitors to access services, engage in activities, travel more easily and generally feel more at home in their new surroundings. Moreover, learning the language of a new place encourages cross-cultural understanding, enriches personal and cultural awareness and strengthens ties between people of different backgrounds.
