Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Lake Atitlan

What are some things you appreciate most about the new culture?

Expats in Lake Atitlan appreciate the warmth and friendliness of the locals, the natural beauty of the volcanoes, lakes and forests that surround the area, and fully immerse themselves in the local culture by learning the Mayan language, eating traditional Mayan food, participating in local festivals and enjoying cultural activities such as visits to markets and villages, trips to hot springs and sacred Mayan sites. They also take pride in the local Mayan culture, which is still strongly evident in daily life.
