Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Wuhan, China, China

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Wuhan, China

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

Expat life in Wuhan can present some cultural challenges, such as the difficulties of navigating through an unfamiliar language and different communication standards. Additionally, the traditional customs in Wuhan often involve a hierarchical structure of respect, which may be rather foreign to those from more egalitarian cultures. Furthermore, the strengths of the local culture – such as large family gatherings, warm hospitality, and strong work ethics – can sometimes be quite overwhelming for those from more individualistic societies. In particular, the sense of community in Wuhan requires a degree of adjustment and participation from expats who may be used to a more reserved and independent atmosphere.
