Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Graz, Austria, Austria

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Graz, Austria

Did you "commit" any embarrassing or humorous cultural blunders? If you did and you'd like to share them, please do tell!

In Graz, it is important to be aware of locals’ customs and polite behavior. Refrain from addressing strangers with nicknames, such as "Honey" or "Sweety", as it is generally seen as impolite. Furthermore, pointing at someone with your index finger is considered rude, so it is important to use your entire hand when gesturing at someone. Additionally, avoid talking loudly in restaurants or public transportation, as this can be disruptive to other people. And lastly, to be respectful of the country’s history, do not make jokes or inappropriate comments about the Second World War or Nazi Germany in casual conversations.
