Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Kabul, Afghanistan, Afghanistan

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Kabul, Afghanistan

Did you "commit" any embarrassing or humorous cultural blunders? If you did and you'd like to share them, please do tell!

It is important to show respect when visiting or living in Kabul. Refrain from expressing negative opinions about politics, religion, or tradition. Avoid using any languages other than Dari and Pashto in public; this could be considered rude. Be aware of appropriate dress for local customs and do not wear clothing that reveals too much skin. Being overly familiar or friendly with strangers should be avoided. Respect the privacy of households and do not enter without being invited. Finally, try not to take photos or videos of people without permission.
