Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Playa del Carmen

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

One challenge that expats in Playa del Carmen often experience is the language barrier. With many locals speaking limited English, it can be difficult and daunting to navigate daily life without being able to effectively communicate. Another common challenge is adjusting to the slower pace of life, as taking things slow is a major part of Mexican culture. Additionally, the strong sense of family and community can be difficult to penetrate for expats, and making friends with locals may prove more difficult than in other places. Finally, Mexican bureaucracy and required paperwork can be a hassle for expats who are unfamiliar with the process.
