Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Puerto Penasco, Mexico

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Puerto Penasco

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

One challenge that expats in Puerto Penasco face when adapting to the local culture is the language barrier. Spanish is the primary language and many locals are not proficient in English, which means learning Spanish is a must to communicate effectively with locals. Additionally, the town has a slower pace of life than many expats may be used to, and this can be frustrating if they are used to a pace of life that is faster. Furthermore, locals often expect helpfulness but do not always return the favor, which can be tough to adjust to as an expat.
