Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Queretaro, Mexico

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Queretaro

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

One challenge that expats in Queretaro often face is the language barrier, as many locals only speak Spanish. Additionally, the cultural differences between expats and locals can be initially overwhelming. For example, siestas and family-oriented events are commonplace and expected, and the traditional machismo attitude among men can take some getting used to. Oftentimes, the unfamiliar customs related to food and the religious festivals celebrated in Queretaro can also prove challenging. The cost of living in Queretaro can also be a challenge for expats who are not used to a lower overall salary.
