Summary: Our Guide to Phnom Penh: Top Attractions, Culinary Hotspots, Nightlife, and More. Plus, Tips on Making Connections with the Locals and Finding Fun Recreational Activities

Welcome to Phnom Penh! If you're planning to move to Phnom Penh, congratulations on taking the first step towards a new adventure. While there are many things to think about before you leave, such as visas, housing, and transportation, it's important to remember that once you arrive, the fun really begins. In this article, we'll introduce you to some of the best sites, restaurants, and nightlife that Phnom Penh has to offer, as well as provide tips on recreational activities and making friends in Phnom Penh.

Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, is a vibrant city that offers a unique blend of traditional charm and urban bustle. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Royal Palace, a complex of buildings which serves as the royal residence of the king of Cambodia. Its stunning architecture and beautiful gardens are a must-see. The Silver Pagoda, located within the Royal Palace compound, houses many national treasures including gold and jeweled Buddha statues. The National Museum of Cambodia, with its traditional Khmer architecture, is home to the world's largest collection of Khmer art, including sculpture, ceramics and ethnographic objects. For a sobering look at Cambodia's tragic past, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek are powerful reminders of the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge regime. For a more uplifting experience, the bustling Central Market and Russian Market offer a wide range of goods, from food and clothes to jewelry and antiques.

Phnom Penh's restaurant and nightlife scene is diverse and ever-evolving, offering everything from traditional Khmer cuisine to international fare. Romdeng, set in a beautiful colonial building, serves up a range of Cambodian dishes, including some unusual options like tarantula. Malis Restaurant, run by renowned chef Luu Meng, is another top spot for Khmer cuisine. For a taste of French colonial influence, head to Van's Restaurant, located in a historic post office building. When it comes to bars and nightlife, the riverside area is a popular spot. The Foreign Correspondents' Club, often simply referred to as 'FCC', is a Phnom Penh institution, offering great views over the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers. Eclipse Sky Bar, the highest rooftop bar in Phnom Penh, is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail while taking in panoramic views of the city. For a more local experience, head to Bassac Lane, a collection of small and quirky bars.

Recreational activities in Phnom Penh are as diverse as the city itself. For those interested in sports, the Olympic Stadium offers a range of activities, from football and athletics to aerobics classes and swimming. The stadium is also a popular spot for locals to gather in the early morning and late afternoon. For a more leisurely activity, a boat trip on the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers offers a different perspective of the city. The Phnom Penh Safari, a world-class zoo and amusement park, is a great option for families. For a taste of local culture, a traditional Khmer dance show at the National Museum or a shadow puppet performance at Sovanna Phum Art Association & Art Gallery are highly recommended. For relaxation, there are numerous spas and wellness centers throughout the city, such as Bodia Spa, which is known for its high-quality treatments and serene environment. Finally, for those interested in learning about Cambodian cuisine, a cooking class at La Table Khmère is a fun and educational experience.
