Summary: Exploring the Best of Orkney Islands: Your Guide to Top Sites, Restaurants, Nightlife, and More. From Cultural Experiences to Outdoor Adventures, We'll Help You Make the Most of Your Time in the City.

Welcome to Orkney Islands! If you're planning to move to Orkney Islands, congratulations on taking the first step towards a new adventure. While there are many things to think about before you leave, such as visas, housing, and transportation, it's important to remember that once you arrive, the fun really begins. In this article, we'll introduce you to some of the best sites, restaurants, and nightlife that Orkney Islands has to offer, as well as provide tips on recreational activities and making friends in Orkney Islands.

The Orkney Islands, an archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland, are known for their rich history, stunning landscapes, and unique culture. Tourists and locals alike can explore a variety of sites of interest, including historical landmarks, natural wonders, and charming villages.

One of the most famous attractions in Orkney is the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the ancient stone circles of the Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness, as well as the well-preserved Neolithic village of Skara Brae. These sites offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people who inhabited the islands over 5,000 years ago.

Another historical site worth visiting is the Italian Chapel, a beautiful Catholic chapel built by Italian prisoners of war during World War II. The chapel, located on the small island of Lamb Holm, is a testament to the resilience and creativity of the prisoners who constructed it using limited materials and resources.

For those interested in the natural beauty of the Orkney Islands, the Old Man of Hoy is a must-see. This iconic 450-foot sea stack, located on the island of Hoy, is a popular destination for hikers and climbers, as well as birdwatchers who come to observe the many seabirds that nest on its cliffs.

The Orkney Islands are also home to several charming villages and towns, such as Stromness and Kirkwall. Stromness, a picturesque harbor town, is known for its narrow, winding streets and historic stone buildings, while Kirkwall, the largest town in Orkney, boasts a beautiful cathedral, a bustling shopping district, and several museums and galleries.

The restaurant and nightlife scene in the Orkney Islands is relatively small but offers a variety of options for visitors and locals to enjoy. Some of the most popular restaurants in the area include The Foveran, a fine dining establishment in Kirkwall that serves locally sourced seafood and produce; The Creel, a cozy seafood restaurant in St. Margaret's Hope; and Helgi's, a popular pub and restaurant in Kirkwall that offers a mix of traditional Scottish fare and international dishes.

For those looking to enjoy a drink or some live music, there are several bars and pubs throughout the islands. The Orkney Brewery, located in Quoyloo, offers tours and tastings of their award-winning beers, while The Reel, a music venue and café in Kirkwall, hosts regular live performances by local musicians. The Ferry Inn, a traditional pub in Stromness, is another popular spot for a pint and some local entertainment.

Recreational activities in the Orkney Islands are largely centered around the area's natural beauty and outdoor pursuits. Hiking and walking are popular activities, with numerous trails and paths available for exploration, such as the coastal walk around the island of Hoy or the RSPB nature reserve at Noup Cliffs on Westray.

Water-based activities are also popular in Orkney, with opportunities for kayaking, sailing, and diving. Orkney Uncovered and Orkney Sea Kayaking offer guided tours and equipment rentals for those looking to explore the islands' coastline and waters. Scapa Scuba, based in Stromness, provides diving excursions to the famous Scapa Flow, a body of water with numerous shipwrecks from both World Wars.

Wildlife watching is another popular pastime in Orkney, with opportunities to spot seals, seabirds, and even whales and dolphins. The RSPB nature reserves at Noup Cliffs and Marwick Head are excellent locations for birdwatching, while boat tours, such as those offered by Orkney Wildlife Tours, provide the chance to see marine life up close.
