Summary: Dive into healthcare resources for expats and digital nomads in Kyoto: identify leading healthcare providers, hospitals, and medical centers for optimal care.

The healthcare system in Kyoto is a blend of public and private services, providing high-quality medical care to both residents and foreigners. The system is known for its efficiency, accessibility, and advanced medical technology.

Japan's Healthcare System

Japan's healthcare system is primarily public, with the government-funded National Health Insurance (NHI) covering all residents, including foreigners living in Japan for more than a year. The NHI covers 70% of all medical costs, with patients paying the remaining 30%. Public hospitals in Kyoto are well-equipped and staffed with highly trained medical professionals. They are recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgeries. However, language can be a barrier as not all staff may speak English. Private hospitals are also available and are often used by expats due to the higher likelihood of English-speaking staff. They are also recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgeries. The experience at a private hospital in Kyoto is generally positive, with high standards of care and modern facilities.

  • Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine Hospital - A public hospital in Kamigyo Ward, offering a wide range of medical services.
  • Kyoto City Hospital - A public hospital in Nakagyo Ward, providing comprehensive medical care.
  • Kyoto First Red Cross Hospital - A private hospital in Higashiyama Ward, known for its emergency care services.
  • Kyoto Min-iren Chuo Hospital - A private hospital in Minami Ward, specializing in cardiovascular diseases.
In case of specialized medical care not available in Kyoto, expats often travel to Osaka, which is approximately an hour away by car.

Health Insurance Companies in Kyoto

Several private health insurance companies operate in Kyoto. These include T&D Life Group, Dai-ichi Life, and Meiji Yasuda Life. These companies offer a range of health insurance products to suit different needs. However, many expats and digital nomads opt for specialized expat health insurance providers, which offer coverage that is more tailored to their unique needs and circumstances.
