Summary: Learn about the health system in Siargao: how it can and cannot be used by expats, nomads, retirees and others moving to and living in Siargao.

The healthcare system in Siargao is a mix of public and private providers. The public healthcare system is managed by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), while private healthcare is offered by various hospitals and clinics.

Philippines's Healthcare System

The public healthcare system in the Philippines is managed by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth). This system is used by both locals and foreigners, including expats and digital nomads. However, for serious medical emergencies and major surgeries, people often recommend using private hospitals due to their better facilities and services. Public hospitals in Siargao are generally basic and may not have the same level of equipment and specialists as private hospitals. Expats primarily use private hospitals, which are known for their higher standards of care and modern facilities.

Hospitals and Clinics for Expats in Siargao

Siargao has a limited number of hospitals and clinics. Here are a few:

  • Siargao District Hospital (Public) - Located in Dapa, it is the main public hospital on the island.
  • Del Carmen RHU Hospital (Public) - A rural health unit located in Del Carmen.
  • Siargao Island Doctors Hospital (Private) - A private hospital in Dapa offering a range of services.
In case of serious medical emergencies, expats often travel to Cebu City where there are more advanced healthcare facilities. Cebu City is approximately a one-hour flight from Siargao.

Emergency Services in Siargao

Emergency services in Siargao are limited. There are no dedicated ambulance services on the island. In case of emergencies, locals and expats usually use private vehicles to reach the nearest hospital. It is recommended to have a local contact number for emergencies as there is no centralized emergency call system.

Health Insurance Companies in Siargao

There are several private health insurance companies operating in Siargao. These include Philam Life, Sun Life, and AXA Philippines. These companies offer a range of health insurance products suitable for different needs and budgets. Expats and digital nomads typically use these companies or opt for specialized expat health insurance providers. It is important to note that not all health insurance plans cover overseas medical expenses, so it is advisable to check the policy details carefully.
