Summary: Learn about the health system in Hue: how it can and cannot be used by expats, nomads, retirees and others moving to and living in Hue.

The healthcare system in Hue is a mix of public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is run by the government and is known as the Vietnam Social Security (VSS), while the private healthcare system consists of privately owned hospitals and clinics.

Vietnam's Healthcare System

The public healthcare system in Vietnam, the Vietnam Social Security (VSS), is primarily used by Vietnamese citizens. However, foreigners, including expats and digital nomads, are also allowed to use the public healthcare system. The quality of care in public hospitals varies, and while they are equipped to handle serious medical emergencies and major surgeries, many people recommend using private hospitals for such cases due to their higher standards of care. Public hospitals in Hue, like many in Vietnam, can be crowded and the staff may not speak English. On the other hand, private hospitals are often better equipped, have English-speaking staff, and are generally preferred by expats. Serious medical emergencies and major surgeries are often handled more efficiently in private hospitals.

Hospitals and Clinics for Expats in Hue

There are several hospitals and clinics in Hue that are recommended for expats. These include:

  • Hue Central Hospital - a public hospital located in the city center.
  • Hue University Hospital - a public hospital affiliated with Hue University.
  • Hue International Hospital - a private hospital offering a wide range of medical services.
  • Family Medical Practice Hue - a private clinic offering general medical services.
In case of specialized medical care or surgeries, expats in Hue often travel to larger cities like Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, which are approximately 2-3 hours and 12 hours away by car, respectively.

Emergency Services in Hue

Emergency services are available in Hue. The ambulance service can be reached by dialing 115. However, response times can vary and there may be delays, especially during peak traffic hours.

Health Insurance Companies in Hue

There are several popular private health insurance companies in Hue, including Bao Viet Insurance, Prudential Vietnam, and Manulife Vietnam. These companies offer a range of health insurance products suitable for both locals and expats. However, many expats and digital nomads prefer to use specialized expat health insurance providers, which offer coverage that is more tailored to their needs.
