Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in China.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in China.

Foreigners who wish to drive in China must obtain a Chinese driving license. International driving permits (IDPs) and driving licenses from other countries are not recognized in China. To obtain a Chinese driving license, foreigners must be at least 18 years old and less than 70 years old. They must also have a valid visa that allows them to stay in China for at least 90 days. The process involves a physical examination and a written test on Chinese traffic laws and regulations, which is available in several languages including English.

Applicants must provide the following documents: a valid passport, a valid Chinese visa, a residence permit, a health certificate from a local hospital, a valid foreign driving license, and a translated copy of the foreign driving license certified by the embassy or consulate. The foreign driving license must be valid and have at least 3 months of validity left before it expires.

Once the application is approved, the Chinese driving license is issued immediately and is valid for six years. The license allows foreigners to drive in all regions of China, as there are no specific requirements that differ based on the city, state, or region in which they live.
