Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Hong Kong.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Hong Kong.

Foreigners who wish to drive in Hong Kong must meet certain requirements. If they hold a valid overseas driving license, they can drive in Hong Kong for up to 12 months from the date of their arrival. After 12 months, they must obtain a Hong Kong driving license. To do this, they must apply to the Transport Department, pass a driving test, or apply for direct issue of a full Hong Kong driving license if they come from one of the recognized countries or places for driving license exchange.

For the direct issue of a full Hong Kong driving license, the applicant must have held a valid overseas driving license for 5 years or more, with at least 6 months of driving experience within the past 3 years. They must also be at least 18 years old and pass an eyesight test. The recognized countries or places for driving license exchange include Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States.

It's important to note that the requirements do not differ based on the city, state, or region in which the foreigner lives. The rules are the same across all of Hong Kong. However, the driving rules and regulations may vary in different countries or regions, so it's always a good idea for foreigners to familiarize themselves with the local driving laws and regulations before driving in Hong Kong.
