Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in New Zealand.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in New Zealand.

In New Zealand, foreigners are allowed to drive if they meet certain requirements. Firstly, they must have a current and valid overseas driver license or an international driving permit. If the driver license is not in English, the driver must carry an accurate English translation issued by a recognized translation service. Secondly, the driver must not have been granted a New Zealand driver license. Thirdly, the driver must not have been disqualified or suspended from driving in New Zealand. Lastly, the driver must not have been in New Zealand for more than 12 months continuously.

It's important to note that these rules apply across the entire country of New Zealand. There are no variations based on city, state, or region. However, the driving laws and road rules can vary, so it's important for foreigners to familiarize themselves with the local driving regulations. For instance, in New Zealand, you must always drive on the left side of the road, and it's compulsory for all passengers to wear seat belts. Also, using a handheld mobile phone while driving is illegal.
