Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Norway.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Norway.

In Norway, foreigners are allowed to drive if they have a valid driving license from their home country. However, this is only applicable if the driving license is written in Latin script or is accompanied by an International Driving Permit (IDP). If the driving license is not in Latin script, it must be officially translated into Norwegian or English. The driving license must also be valid for the type of vehicle you are driving.

For those who are staying in Norway for more than three months, they may need to exchange their foreign driving license for a Norwegian one. This usually involves passing a practical driving test. However, some countries have agreements with Norway that allow their citizens to exchange their driving licenses without taking a test. It's important to check with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration for specific details.

As for regional differences, the rules for driving are generally the same across all regions in Norway. However, it's worth noting that Norway has many toll roads, and foreign drivers are expected to pay these tolls. The payment methods may vary, so it's advisable to research this beforehand.

Lastly, Norway has strict laws regarding drink-driving. The legal limit is very low, at 0.2 grams of alcohol per litre of blood. This is stricter than many other countries, so foreign drivers should be particularly cautious about this.
