Getting a Driver's License in Oman
Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Oman.
Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Oman.
Foreigners who wish to drive in Oman must have a valid international driving permit (IDP) along with their original driving license from their home country. The IDP must be obtained before arriving in Oman. The driving license must be in English or Arabic. If it is in any other language, it should be translated into English or Arabic and attested by the relevant embassy in Oman. The driver must also be at least 18 years old.
Additionally, foreigners who are residents in Oman can apply for an Omani driving license. To do this, they must pass a driving test. The test includes a written exam on the rules of the road in Oman, as well as a practical driving test. Foreigners who hold a driving license from certain countries may be able to exchange it for an Omani license without taking the test.
It's important to note that driving in Oman requires adherence to strict rules. Speeding and reckless driving are heavily penalized. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, and the use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited.
As far as we know, the requirements for driving do not differ based on the city, state, or region in Oman. However, it's always a good idea to check with local authorities or the Royal Oman Police for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
