Getting a Driver's License in Slovakia
Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Slovakia.
Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Slovakia.
In Slovakia, foreigners are allowed to drive if they have a valid international driving permit (IDP) along with their valid national driving license. The IDP is valid for one year, and it must be issued in the same country as the national driving license. If a foreigner becomes a resident in Slovakia, they can use their foreign driving license for 185 days from the date of their residency registration. After this period, they must exchange their foreign driving license for a Slovak one.
Foreigners from EU and EEA countries can use their national driving licenses in Slovakia without any restrictions. However, if they become residents, they are recommended to register their driving license with the local authorities. This is not a requirement, but it can simplify procedures in case of loss or theft of the license.
Foreigners from countries outside the EU and EEA must obtain a Slovak driving license if they want to drive in Slovakia after their IDP expires. To do this, they must pass a driving test (theory and practice) in Slovakia. The test can be taken in Slovak or English. Some driving schools offer courses in English.
There are no specific requirements that differ based on the city, state, or region in Slovakia. The rules for driving are the same throughout the country.
