Drivers License Sweden - Getting a Driver's License in Sweden

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Sweden.

In Sweden, the requirements for a foreigner to legally drive depend on the duration of their stay and the country of their driving license's issuance. If you are visiting Sweden and have a driving license issued by an EU or EEA country, you can drive in Sweden as long as your license is valid. The same applies to those with a driving license issued in Japan, South Korea, or Switzerland.

If your driving license was issued in a country outside the EU/EEA, you can drive in Sweden for up to one year from your date of entry. If you are planning to stay in Sweden for more than one year, you need to exchange your foreign driving license for a Swedish one. This usually involves taking a theory test and a practical driving test.

It's important to note that the driving license must be valid and not suspended, revoked, or surrendered in any other country. Also, the driver must meet the minimum age requirements for driving in Sweden, which is 18 years for a car and light truck.

There are no specific requirements that differ based on the city, state, or region in Sweden. The rules for driving are country-wide and apply to all regions of Sweden. However, it's always a good idea to familiarize yourself with local traffic rules and regulations, as well as parking rules in different cities.
