Driving in Gurgaon

Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Gurgaon.

1. Chaotic Traffic

Driving in Gurgaon, like many other parts of India, can be quite chaotic and stressful. The traffic rules are not always followed strictly and you may find a lot of vehicles, including cars, bikes, auto-rickshaws, and even animals on the road. It's important to be very alert and patient while driving.

2. Car Recommendation

It's recommended to have a compact car for easy maneuverability in the heavy traffic and narrow lanes. SUVs or larger cars can be difficult to handle in congested areas. Also, consider a car with good ground clearance due to the condition of some roads.

3. Parking Difficulty and Cost

Finding parking can be a challenge in Gurgaon, especially in commercial areas. Most of the malls and office complexes have paid parking facilities. The cost varies depending on the location and duration of parking. It's advisable to check the parking situation before you head to a particular place.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in India with an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with their native country's driving license for up to one year. After that, they need to obtain an Indian driving license.

5. Obtaining an Indian Driving License

To get an Indian driving license, you need to apply through the local Regional Transport Office (RTO). The process involves submitting the required documents, passing a written test, and a practical driving test. It's advisable to hire a local agent or use a driving school service to navigate through the process.

6. Hiring a Driver

Many expats prefer to hire a driver rather than driving themselves. This can be a more convenient and stress-free option. There are several agencies that provide trained drivers on a monthly salary basis.

7. Road Safety

Always wear your seatbelt and ensure that your vehicle is in good condition. Be aware of the local traffic rules and signs. Avoid driving at night if possible, as the roads are not always well-lit and pedestrians and animals can suddenly appear on the road.

8. Patience is Key

Driving in Gurgaon requires a lot of patience due to the heavy traffic and often unpredictable behavior of other road users. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and avoid aggressive driving.
