Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Bogota.

1. Understanding the Traffic

Driving in Bogota can be quite challenging due to heavy traffic, especially during peak hours. The city is known for its "Pico y Placa" system, which restricts certain vehicles from driving during peak hours based on the last digit of their license plate. This is done to reduce congestion. Therefore, it's important to familiarize yourself with this system if you plan to drive regularly.

2. Car Recommendation

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Bogota due to the city's narrow streets and heavy traffic. However, if you plan to explore the countryside or mountainous regions, a 4x4 vehicle would be more suitable.

3. Parking Situation

Finding parking in Bogota can be difficult, especially in busy areas. Most parking spaces are metered, and the cost can add up quickly. There are also private parking lots available, but these can be quite expensive. It's advisable to use public transportation or taxis when possible to avoid the hassle of parking.

4. Driving License

Foreigners can drive in Colombia with an international driving permit for up to 180 days. After this period, you will need to obtain a Colombian driving license. To do this, you must pass a driving test and a theoretical exam. You will also need to provide a medical certificate and proof of residency.

5. Road Safety

While Bogota has made significant improvements in road safety in recent years, it's still important to drive cautiously. Be aware of other drivers, as driving styles can be aggressive and unpredictable. Also, be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists, as they often share the road with vehicles.

6. Use of Technology

Using a GPS or navigation app can be very helpful when driving in Bogota, especially if you're not familiar with the city. These tools can help you avoid traffic jams and find the quickest routes to your destination.

7. Car Insurance

It's mandatory to have car insurance in Colombia. Make sure to have your insurance documents with you at all times when driving, as you may be asked to show them during routine traffic checks.
