Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Delft.

Driving in Delft - Tips for Expats Driving in Delft

1. Driving in Delft

Driving in Delft, like most of the Netherlands, is generally a pleasant experience. The roads are well-maintained and the traffic rules are strictly enforced. However, the city is quite compact and has an extensive network of cycle paths, so you may find that driving is not always the most convenient mode of transport. Also, be aware that the Dutch drive on the right-hand side of the road.

2. Recommended Car

Given the compact nature of Delft and the Netherlands in general, a smaller car is usually more practical. It's easier to navigate through narrow streets and park in tight spaces. However, the choice of car will ultimately depend on your personal needs and preferences.

3. Parking in Delft

Finding a parking spot in Delft can be challenging, especially in the city center. Most parking in the city center is paid, and it can be quite expensive. There are several parking garages available, but they can fill up quickly. It's often easier and cheaper to park a bit further out and then walk or cycle into the city center.

4. Driving with an International License

As a foreigner, you can drive in the Netherlands with an international driving license for up to 185 days. After this period, you will need to obtain a Dutch driving license. If you have a driving license from an EU or EEA country, you can use it in the Netherlands for up to 15 years from the date of issue.

5. Obtaining a Dutch Driving License

If you're from a non-EU or non-EEA country, you'll need to pass a theory and practical driving test to get a Dutch driving license. You can take these tests in English. Before you can take the tests, you'll need to apply for a theory exam at the Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing (CBR). Once you've passed the theory exam, you can apply for a practical exam. After passing both exams, you can apply for a driving license at your local municipality.

6. Tips for Driving in Delft

Always be aware of cyclists. The Netherlands is a country of cyclists, and they have the right of way in many situations. Also, be aware of the many one-way streets in Delft. Lastly, always adhere to the speed limits, as speeding fines can be quite high.
